Cairmal Puppy - Nelly

by Casey Waldecker-Banks
(Ilvesheim, Germany)

Nelly - 5 months

Nelly - 5 months

Nelly is a 5 month old Cairmal puppy and an absolute bundle of ENERGY!

We are really happy with her... it was a complete coincidence that we got a Cairmal... I just fell in love with the little puppy at the farm where we bought her and knew that she was the one!

We also have some allergy prone people in our family, and I've only just discovered (through the information on this website) that shes the perfect dog for such situations! I can't wait to let them know.

Nelly is exactly what everyone here is describing, Bright, Lovable, Excitable and ADORABLE. She attracts attention everywhere we go but isn't too fond of having strangers pat her, she needs to get to know people first!

Our Maltese Cairn Terrier mix is wonderful with kids, but you definitely need to watch her because she loves to jump up on them and that of course can sometimes be a bit overwhelming and when shes in not too much of a playful mood she listens really well, She already has a whole list of Tricks, Sit, Down, Shake, Rollover, Beg and a few really fun ones, like Shy (where she hides her face) and BANG! where she falls over....quite alot for a 5 month old puppy!

We visit a puppy group once a week and she gets along swimmingly with other dogs, regardless if they are puppies or full grown... we've not had a problem yet.

She loves the camera lol. Our camera makes a little peep sound before you take a photo and it always catches her attention so she stays still and poses... such a princess!

Hi Casey,
Thanks for your advice. As I said, we're not keen on having her cut again as she didn't look like our dog after it was done! It's now growing back in and her coat is a little longer now than in the photo. As for her colour, when we first got her, she was a ginger colour and her skin pale pink underneath. However, after she was about 7 or 8 months, her skin underneath started to turn black and her coat started coming in white. She has patches of the ginger colour but not much now. It seems to be on the tip of her coat and if we did have her cut again (which we won't),she would probably lose all traces of ginger. I have to brush her daily as she tends to get the odd knot. In the past 2 weeks, I've started using a new shampoo, Germinator, and this has made her coat less greasy. I'm hoping this will work long term and she won't have to be bathed so often. Stressful for us both! Like your Nellie, Florrie has been the easiest dog to train. She also loves children and old people! Can't get her to stop mouthing, though. Really glad you got in touch, I, too was really excited to see Florrie's double!

Re: Florrie
by: Nelly's Mum

Thats exactly what i thought when i saw Florrie's photo! You were my inspiration for sending something in about Nelly, i got so excited to find another dog so similar! My first question to you is has Florie always been so light? I'm afraid Nelly is going to come through white....

No we havn't had her trimmed yet...and i won't be thinking about it till Spring now as i think she's going to need her nice warm coat in the Winter...but i would suggest (and probably do myself next year) a techniqe that lots of dog breeders use (for Australian Silky Terriers and Griffon Bruxellois for example, my family breeds both) called 'Stripping', of course they do it for show dogs, its basically plucking the hair out little tufts at a time its doesn't hurt the dog as much as you think its more uncomfortable for them...look into it as its better for thinning a coat rather than chopping it all off.

Can't beleive how much she looks like our Florrie! Florrie came from a Maltese breeder, and again she was an accident. Her mother jumped fom the pen while the farm Cairn was visiting. As for the merecat impersonation, Florrie is always doing this on her walks. Cars peep their horns and my husband says that one day she is going to cause an accident as she draws so much attention.
Can I ask, have you had her clipped yet? We did, and she didn't look so good. It's growing back in, but the groomer seems to think she should be clipped twice a year. As Nellie's coat looks so much like Florrie's, I would be interested to know how you have her groomed.
