Distilled Water for Tear Stains

I have a six year old female named Fancy. I asked several vets what could be done about her eye staining to no avail. I was reading a magazine on Maltese and found an article that suggested distilled water. Now don't expect this to miraculously work overnight it takes at least a couple of months.

It seems that this article said it was the excess minerals coming out of the dogs' system, something along the same lines of us humans pooping out vitamins we don't need. A gallon of distilled water is only about a dollar and it takes my baby a long time to drink a gallon of water, even with giving her fresh water daily.

WARNING!! DO NOT GIVE DISTILLED WATER DAILY!!
by: Anonymous

I know you have the best intentions. But...

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG DISTILLED WATER ON A DAILY BASIS!!!

Distilled water will destroy the body's mineral content & worse, will upset the electrolyte balance in the dog's system leading to potassium deficiencies & heart problems. It sucks vitamins & minerals from the body & flushes out their system. Giving it to your dog once or twice a week for an internal cleanse/tear stain controller is fine. But, do not, under any circumstances give DISTILLED water to your pet every day. Spring water is fine. I give my Mini Eskie Spring Water only & it controls her tear stains very nicely. So, yeah... be sure to opt for spring water & if you absolutely need to, only give the distilled water AT MOST 2-3 Times a week.

PS - Wiping under the eyes with distilled water twice daily makes a big difference in the stain. I did this for my Luna, along with her drinking only spring water & being on a grain-free diet (I feed her Orijen brand kibble. She is totally tear free.

I must say it again, just to draw attention:

!! DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG DISTILLED WATER ONLY !!

Tear Stains
by: M from Oklahoma

I've had a Maltese since shes been a puppy. Ive never had problems with tear stains. Ive always used bottled water with her and Angel eyes in her food. Between the two they seen to work great! Also, check your dog food and make sure it does not contain red dyes in the food. Hope this helps.
