Maltese Westie Dog Breed - Joey

by Julie
(Rochester, NY)

Rainy day

Rainy day

We tried to figure out what our Maltese Westie dog breed Joey was for a long time. He's just too big and has a straight tail, he can't be a Maltese! But just his personality gives it away; he's gotta have some terrier in him.

He loves walks, and absolutely loves to play, but he will sit quietly on your lap for hours. He's the only dog I know that can have a staring contest with you and not be growling. His love of strangers gets him in trouble sometimes, running off to say hello to the neighbors, but he's easily coaxed back with the shake of his treat jar.

Our Maltese Westie hates squirrels, and will never give up the chase; he also enjoys treeing cats. Everybody who meets him wants to keep him, he's a big white shaggy ball of loving!

You may ahve a Coton de Tulear
by: D

Had the same experience. Bought what I thought was a Maltese, but he was just too big and stocky, and had an almost human personality. Very clever dog, used to sit up on his behind and beg and sometimes hop around on his hind legs - all not taught by us - he just started doing it. After a lot of picture searches and reading, I figured out he was a Coton de Tulear, and I think you may have that instead of a Maltese Westie cross. Read up a little on the breed and look through some youtube videos and it will all make sense.

Our pup Jack
by: Sarah

I realise now that our pup isn't a Bijon Frise (he was sold to us as that) but a cross Westie and Maltese Terrier! He's called Jack Daniels (Jack for short!)and he's sooo funny, we all love him to bits, especially my youngest son, Joey :0) Will try to upload a picture of Jack

Westie/Maltese
by: Steph

We also have a Westie/Maltese mix we found at the shelter. She is so cute and a very good dog, however I think she is on the chubby side, she weighs 23 lbs.

I'm not sure how much food to give her (obviously too much!) Aside from being the perfect dog, (we only had her since Nov 09) she has not had an accident in the house, comes when you call her, rarely barks, except when she goes on walks and sees another dog thats when she barks and almost does somersaults in the air trying to get to the dog, so does anyone else have this problem?

twin
by: Karen

I have a Mixed breed Maltese too, that was bought as a full Maltese, but there is no way...he looks just like your Joey...except his tail does curl up. I wonder what kind of mix he is...his groomer says he is a West Malty...I don't really care, as I love him to death no matter what he is! His name is Scruffy, and he has a cream colored patch down his back. Wonderful dog. He could be Joeys twin, weighs 11 lbs.
