Mauxie Puppies - Gracie Lou

Mauxie Puppies Valentines 2008

Mauxie Puppies Valentines 2008

My Mauxie puppy Gracie was born on Thanksgiving Day, 2007 and is now 10 months old. She is soooooo much fun, runs around the house like a maniac at least once a day, just having fun.

She loves to play fetch and tug-of-war with her toys, go on long rides with my husband and me in our 1968 VW Bug and on trips in the RV, chase crickets/bugs in the grass, chase leaves, eat twigs and just enjoys living in general.

We did find out week before last that her right front foot has fused at the wrist and it turns out to the right side. Our vet said this does happen to Dachshunds frequently and we were unfortunate to have this genetic issue show up in her.

The only time we notice it is when she has REALLY played hard and she will limp for 3 or 4 minutes till she "works the kinks out". Sometimes this will occur for a brief time after she has slept in the same position for long periods of time. This seems to happen every 2-3 weeks or so. Has anyone had similar problems?

More Info on Gracie
by: Susan

Please don't apologize for the questions. I love to talk about Gracie. The posted picture was Gracie's Valentine picture so she was only 3 months old at that time. She weighed about 4 1/2 pounds and was a real furball. Her mother was a long-haired doxie and her hair was extra long, then with the daddy Maltese, Gracie really has the hair genes from both sides! She looks a lot different now; has a body trim but long tail, head and whiskers. She is mostly white/light blonde. She was dark dark brown for the first eight or nine weeks of age. I'd love to email you more pictures, but I don't know how to share email addresses safely. Wouldn't want it out there for everyone. Maybe I'll figure out if I can edit her first picture and update the info.

Leg Problems Update
by: Susan

We (vet included) are keeping a close eye on her, but not going with surgery yet. How in the world did you keep your baby still for 6 months? Gracie is the most rambunctious girl I've ever seen! Also, how long did the surgery last, time in doggie hospital and cost, if you don't mind me asking?

Leg problems
by: Karen

Hi- yes... I have Yoohoo the Mauxie. When he was 1 year old one of the 2 bones {called the ulna)in his front leg stopped growing while the other one {the radius) continued to grow. One day we noticed that he was limping. As the days passed it did not get better. Our vet sent us to an orthopedic specialist where we found out the bad news. He had to have surgery. The bone had to be cut. The surgery went fine. Keeping him still for 6 months was very difficult. But now he is fine. Hopefully this is the end of it. He is and always has been very bowlegged. I had pure dachsunds growing up and never had any problems like this. I thought maybe it had something to do with the crossbreeding of the maltese and dachsund. I don't know. All I know is he is one of the cutest dogs ever!! Are you sure that Gracie Lou does not need surgery?
