The same day I adopted my Maltese Ody, a friend adopted a female Toy Poodle. They were going to name the Poodle "Penelope." The night before, the History Channel had a show on Greek myths, and talked about Odysseus.
In the myth, Penelope was Odysseus' wife's name. So I thought the names would go together.
In the end, the friend named their dog Sofie, but by then, Ody had already begun responding to his name. So it sticks.
Everyone thinks I named my Maltese after the dog in the Garfield comics, Odie. But I didn't.
