Yorkie Maltese Mix Puppy - Jack

by Tany
(West Palm Beach, FL)

Our Yorkie Maltese mix puppy is 3mos old. He bites alot. Toys don't seem to be a satisfactory replacement. Nyla bones only keep his attention for a few minutes. "no" is starting to work though.

He barks alot, at least it seems that way to me as I have an 9 mo old Chi Chi and she has only barked 3 times in 4 1/2 months. Our Yorkie Maltese mix has some anxiety issues and the noise that comes from this 1 1/2 lbs dog is incredible. It's not so much a whine its more like screeching barks.

I'm not used to all this as my other 3 dogs didn't exhibit these types of puppy behaviors. I've been reading everything on both the Maltese and Yorkie breeds to try to help me with training. He's cute as can be once you finally get him tired enough to sit still in your lap. ;-)

"Terrible Puppy Stage"
by: Anonymous

I was in your predicament several months ago. Both my other dogs never went thru the "terrible puppy stage" so I was very frustrated when I brought home my Maltese/Bichon Mix...he would bite ALL the time...& chew anything & everything!!! He also had an unbelievable bark for such a little dog! I finally decided I had to do something as I had children & could not have him biting them. A very sturn "NO!" and a tap on the nose didn't seem to work at first, but he quickly learned and I soon only had to say "NO!" & point my finger at him. The biting & chewing seemed to stop completely by the time he was 6 mos, so just hang in there! As for the barking, I tackled that pretty much the same way...when he would start to bark when someone came to the house, I would pick him up, let him know it was ok and there was no reason to bark...and if he continued to bark, I would hold his head close to me & tell him "NO bark" or "Hush"...after probably about a dozen times, he learned to only give a few barks just to let us know someone was there, but now when I say, it's ok, & give him a pat on the head (as to let him know he was a good boy for letting us know someone was there)...I tell him to "Hush" and he goes & lays down. So don't give up, just be persistent and it'll all pay off sooner than you think!
