Maltese Mix - Elkhart County Humane Society

This is a couple days after we got Winston

A great way to adopt a Maltese puppy is through your local Humane Society. I check my local website often and found our Maltese mix Winston! We went and had a meet and greet with our Cocker Spaniel and it was love at first sight!

Winston is a Maltipoo. He weighs 4 1/2 lbs. We paid $100 at the shelter, it included his shots. We had to take him to the vet to get neutered, pull some teeth, and get his rabies. He is 1 year old.

Just was diagnosed with this disability.
Contact me by e-mail if you know of anyone willing to help.

Maltese Adoption
by: Anonymous

I have a pure breed male Maltese named Gunner, we bought him as a puppy and he is now 2 years old.

We love our little Gun Buns with every ounce of our being.

How can one not fall in love with how extremely cute and adorable the look of the sweet innocent eyes of the amazing Maltese.

However, there is an EXTREME amount of care and attention that an owner must have the ability to dedicate a large amount of their time to a Maltese dog.

They need to be groomed once a day and the grooming process, even if not a show dog is time consuming.

They need to be bathed for sure once every other week.

Their ears need to be taken care of every week.

Tear stains is very common with the loving Maltese. An owner must care for tear stains on a daily basis 3x a day. If not, your beautiful Maltese can easily get yeast infection of the eye.

My Gunner only gets filtered water. Not just for his tear stains, but also for his health. It's alarming to learn the knowledge of what is in your tap water.

Also, the Maltese needs special paw care as they are prone to simply licking their paws, which causes them irritation.

There is so much more involved with making sure your Maltese dog is getting the best medical and loving care.

Another thing that is very important to point out with caring for a Maltese is in regards to separation anxiety. My Gunner is crate trained, but he can not go longer than a few hours being in his crate, unless it's bed time.

Whenever, I have to leave during the day I have to put Gunner in his crate I always make sure to put a calm radio station on low for him. This gives him some company, but he is never left alone in his crate during the day for more than 3 to 4 hours tops.

Separation anxiety will cause a great amount of stress and sadness for the sweet Maltese. It will cause sassy behavior and the owner that doesn't have extreme knowledge of the Maltese will go crazy with the excessive barking, nipping, and sassiness, which then frustrates the owner and sometimes ends up with the owner giving up the loyal loving compassionate Maltese to a Shelter.

There is so much to share. But, I wish to share one more thing. I waited a long, long time before I got my Gunner. Because I waited until my children were teenagers. I do not recommend families with young children to own a Maltese. Not because of the breed, because the Maltese is a loyal little guard dog who loves to play with whoever will play with them.

But, if you have young kidlets and a Maltese, you will have to literally keep every second of your eyes on your kidlets and your Maltese.

If you have kidlets and want a smaller dog, my recommendation would be a Havanese. Before Gunner, I had Lilly, my pure breed Havanese. You still have to keep an eye out because a puppy Havanese is very small. But, as they become an adult the Havanese is pretty resilient. Brings tears to my eyes in memory of our sweet Lilly.

But, now I'm looking to adopt a Maltese simply to offer a home that is safe and full of love, good nutrition, quality vet care, a companion for Gunner and yes, another companion for our family (me). ;)

Pearl River County Mississippi Humane Society

by Mary Cooley
(New Orleans, LA)

Did you ever think a traumatic event could have a positive result? After returning back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and to an empty nest(my youngest had started college in the midst of Hurricane Katrina) I found my newly renovated home beautiful but empty.

I wanted to fill the void and not having a dog in over 30 years, adoption quickly came to mind. I went online and searched the New Orleans area SPCA and surrounding area. Still no luck. I remember the dog I had about 30 years ago was from the Pear River County, Mississippi area. so that's where I searched next. I saw a puppy online and drove about an hr. to see it at the humane society. The dog I ended up adopting is a Maltese Terrier mix.

His name is Ace and was only 4 months old at the time of adoption. He is a beautiful white with long fluffy ears with beige markings at the tips. He has big round black eyes and black button nose. Personality is astounding. Very loyal to me and protective though he is friendly to everyone that gives him a little pat on the back.

My family is very attached to Ace and feel very lucky to have him in our family. This was the positive aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Adopt a Maltese Puppy from the City Pound

by Eileen Tobin
(Victoria, TX USA)

You can adopt a Maltese puppy from the city pound. I help rescue and re-home small dogs and take foster care of puppies until they are old enough to get adopted. Angie and her baby were at our local animal control. Angie's puppy got adopted really fast.

No one wanted Angie because she was older and had health problems so she went home with me and lived 3 more years. She was one of the best doggies I have ever had. She was a joy to be around so loving and loyal. Angie loved everyone even my big doggies and everyone loved Angie. She lived life to the fullest and was always happy and loved to play.

She knew she was very humorous and delighted in making her human friends laugh. You could tell by her big smile that was larger than she was.

Brandy
by: Anonymous

I adopted a Maltese Poodle from Maltese Rescue approximately three years ago. She had kidney failure and I had to put her to sleep today. I believe she may have been at least 9 years old when I adopted her, so she was approximately 12 or 13. She was sweet and only weighed three pounds. We believe she may have been caged and or abused before we found her on a Maltese rescue site. It is nice to know so many people are willing to adopt pets with health problems. While "Brandy" was going through her kidney treatments, I found a pit bull dog with mange on the side of the road. It was scared, I tempted it with some of "Brandy's" food. I was able to put the dog in my car and took it to the vet and paid for boarding and the vet bills. A technician at the vet's office fell in love with the dog and took him home. It is sad so many pets need to be rescued and are abused or abandoned.

Adopt a Maltese Puppy from the Humane Society

by Lydia
(Auckland, New Zealand Mangere Bridge)

We were searching on tadreme for a month, and were about to give up hope. Our lost resort was to ring the humane society to adopt a Maltese puppy.

We found out about a Maltese mix, and contacted the owners. Then we went up to look, and fell in love with her!

Shelter Adoption - Ragsy

by Robert
(Fort Gratiot, MI)

Our Maltese is 4 years old and we adopted him from the shelter when he was 2 months old. When we saw him put his little nose through the door, it was love at first sight.

Ragsy is absolutely adorable and a little fluff ball of love. Our Maltese loves to snuggle and play, he's a real bundle of energy. He loves to ride in the car, every time my husband picks up the car keys he hurries and jumps in my husbands arms making sure he gets to go for a ride.

He sleeps with us every night and usually snuggles between my husband and I. But when it comes to seeing big dog's he thinks he's king of the castles. It's funny the big dogs always back down and then their friends and will play together. It's really funny because you thing Ragsy's would be scared and jump in our lap.

I'm adopted too!
by: Anonymous

My name is Buffy and I was rescued by my owners 3 years ago. I think I'm about 7 years old. I had been hit by a car and damaged the nerves in my front leg. I was going to be put down but my mum and dad saved me. I now hop around very happily on three legs and can run as fast as my Siberian Husky sister. My mum and dad love me so much !

Ragsie
by: Little Miss Muffit

That is a cute picture for sure! We have a 20 lb. black and white male cat who plays with Miss Muffit all the time. We really enjoy Muffit. She is almost 5 mos. old and just had her first big car trip to California and back from Utah. She was so good, it was amazing! She'll get lots more trips in the future. At the motel, she used her potty box and never barked. These dogs are so intelligent. Ragsie is so lucky to have you.

Adopt a Maltese Mix from Petco

I live in Louisiana and I rescued a Maltipoo from Petco's adoption days on Saturday's. He is the most delightful dogs I've ever owned!! He definitely had not had training in his previous home that surrendered him but with a few weeks of consistent training he has easily learned our house rules and loves showing off his new learned commands! He has only been here with me for a little over a month, but Already I can't imagine life without him!! His former home had not groomed him and he had to be completely shaves down bc he was so matted, but he is turning into quite the looker as his hair grows out! As you can tell, I don't have enough good things to say about him!! His adoption fee was $100 and worth every penny and much much more!!!
