Cotonese Puppies - Kingston and Bruno

by Olivia
(South Bend, IN)

This is Kingston!

This is Kingston!

Our family has two Cotonese puppies! Kingston is two and Bruno just joined our family yesterday. They are such cuties and love to cuddle! Kingston is such a sweet boy. Bruno is also very sweet and just wants to lay in your lap all day long. They are very smart, and we didn't have any problems training Kingston. We hope that little Bruno will be the same way.

I recommend Cotonese to families all the time, and especially families with small kids as Kingston loves kids!

Cotonese
by: Susan

Your Kingston is beautiful. We have a Morkie who looks more like Maltese than Yorkie. We are going to be getting another small one and have been going back and forth between Yorkie or Maltese. I have never heard of Cotonese before, are they a mix of Maltese and something else? About how big do they get. Our little Belle is 13 months and she weighs 6 pounds. You could email me at suespreng@yahoo.com if you wouldn't mind answering some questions.
Thanks so much.
Susan

Cotonese Puppy - Marie Antoinette

by Michelle
(Neodesha, Kansas)

On Aug. 12th, the day before my birthday, my son talked me into going into the Pet Store. I have ALWAYS wanted a Maltese. While in the store, I seen these pretty Cotoneses and instantly fell in love with Marie.

She was not like the other dogs in the pet shop. She did not try to get my attention by barking or whining. She was herself, quiet but, friendly. The pet shop clerk let me hold her and Marie and I instantly bonded at that point. She put her head on my chest and was so relaxed. I wanted her for my birthday and wanted to do some research before I committed.

I went home and read up about the Coton de Tulear dog since I was not familiar with the breed. I liked what I read and then called the pet store that afternoon and told them to save her I would be there to pick her up the following morning.

I have had her for almost a week now. Marie is very smart but, can be stubborn at times. I am training her in small sessions... we pretty much have "come" down but, I keep training for reinforcement. I have started introducing "sit" and she is learning it well. Potty training is taking some time but, I stay on top of her. She does not like to go out while it is raining to potty. I put her on her leash to take her out and this is where the stubbornness comes in. If she does not want to walk, she will lay down and not budge, or she will sit and not be budged. I am gradually working her out of this by walking her with our other dog in the evening.

Marie is a love bug and needs much attention. She does not like to be alone at times and has become attached to me. I have found to keep from separation anxiety, something with my scent is placed next to her if I am away and she must go into the crate or if I'm in the next room doing housework. This works well, and I discovered this when she fell asleep next to my sandals and I was able to do what I needed while she slept, she did wake up a few times but was ok with me being away and went back to sleep. If I must leave the house, I do not make a fuss over it. I simply crate her and leave. As for the groomer's and vet, she handled those very well yesterday. She has a great disposition!

As for getting along with the rest of the family aka the pack..Marie loves playing with my husband and son, but comes to find me when she is done. Leo, our half Lab Basset hound has been introduced to Marie and they play very well together. Marie KNOWS NO fear! She took to Leo and she chased him, then Leo chased her.

Marie chews and bites because of her teeth. I have toys for her for when she does and she can be easily redirected to chew on them instead of us. If she does get too rough, we say "OUCH" very loudly and she gets the hint. She loves when we get down to her level to play with her. And she will chase her ball when we roll it.

Marie's fur is very cottony and soft to touch. She is a big furball! Marie is a joy and a blessing in my life!

Wow, your Maltese mix puppy is smart! My Maltese is 8yrs old and doesn't know many of those tricks. Hopefully I can teach an old dog new tricks. You've inspired me!

March Follow up -Marie
by: Michelle

Marie is doing very well! She has matured a bit. Potty training took some time, rarely she does have an accident if I am not by the door to see her when she lets me know. I have trained her to sit, leave it, stay, stand on her hind legs and dance in a circle, walk on her hind legs to me, lay, roll over, and "load up" into the car. She is very food motivated to train easily. She is really smart. We lost several puppy teeth and has chewed up most of her toys with her teething..LOL. She developed with her agility and jumping. She jumps every now. Her favorite thing...going in the car for rides and traveling, she LOVES to hang her head out of the window when the car is moving. She hyperestacically greets me when I come back home. She is the best dog I have ever owned.

Follow up to Marie
by: Michelle

Just following up about Marie. Marie is doing very well. We almost have her housebroke since she is a little more stubborn. I have her crate trained. I have trained her the commands of "sit", "stand", "leave it", "come", and "down" we are working on "roll over". She got her adult distemper vaccine last week and it took her a few days to feeling up to par. We took her to the lake last weekend and she is a natural swimmer. She jumped right in and would swim to each family member. She is gradually getting over the seperation anxiety that I have worked on with her.

Female Cotonese - Coco

My female Cotonese is honestly the cutest little dog I've ever seen and I love her! I couldn't have found a better dog for my family. She is extremely loving and loyal. She'll Sit with us when we watch tv and beg to come outside with us in the backyard. Although they do require a lot of maintenance with they're, fur they're still perfect. I recommend a Maltese Coton de Tulear mix for anyone who will take the time to love them.

Oreo Knight Garrett

My Cotonese is a rare black and white. That's why we named him Oreo. He is a very spoiled attention getter and he hates when someone doesn't notice how cute his is.

Cotonese - Harley

by Kris
(Buffalo, NY)

Attempting to stop me from work!

Attempting to stop me from work!

Harley is a wonderful little dog 3 yr old Cotonese. He has an amazing temperament. He is very loving, and gentle with all animals, and even insects. He tends to be on the quiet side, he is interested in everything and loves to investigate.

He is not a jealous dog and is willing to share everything. When playing then he loves to act tough which includes growling, pouncing and pulling at pant legs. However if you say the word ouch or hurt he will immediately stop whatever he is doing to apologize with kisses!

I have spoiled him over the years so he has a personality and mind of his own which he has no fear of showing when he wants something. He is extremely smart, and easy to train if he feels inclined to do so, meaning he must feel the reward is worth it!

housebreaking Huey
by: Jan K

Just got Huey a 3 month old cotonese. He is adorable, sweet and loves to play. He is very good and keeps the crate clean but goes everywhere else in the house. We can't take him out because we have to wait for him to get his rabies shot. Any suggestions?

I know what you mean about 'acting tough'--my lil' one (Ellsworth) does the same but as soon as you correct him, he gives you this innocent face and tons of kisses. Take care of Harley-he's such a cutie pie!!
